What to Expect at Your First Acupuncture Visit

If you have never had acupuncture before, you may wonder what happens during your first visit. Will it hurt? How many needles are used? What should you wear?

At Spring Oriental Medicine, we want your first visit to feel comfortable, unhurried, and personalized. Your treatment begins with understanding you—not just the symptoms you are experiencing.

1. A Conversation About Your Health

Your first visit begins with a detailed consultation. We will ask about your main concerns, when your symptoms started, what makes them better or worse, and how they affect your daily life.

We may also discuss your medical history, medications, previous treatments, sleep, digestion, stress, energy, and other aspects of your overall health.

This information helps us understand the patterns that may be contributing to your symptoms and develop an individualized treatment plan.

2. An Acupuncture Assessment

Traditional Chinese Medicine uses a different approach to assessment than conventional medicine. In addition to discussing your symptoms, we may observe your tongue and check your pulse.

These findings provide additional information about your overall pattern of health and help guide point selection.

We also consider your medical history and current health conditions. Our approach combines traditional Chinese medicine with a modern, evidence-informed perspective.

3. Your Acupuncture Treatment

Once we have completed the assessment, we will explain the treatment and answer any questions you may have.

Very thin, sterile, single-use acupuncture needles are gently inserted at selected points on the body. Most patients feel little or no discomfort. You may notice a brief sensation when a needle is inserted, followed by a feeling of heaviness, warmth, tingling, or relaxation.

You will typically rest comfortably with the needles in place for about 20–30 minutes.

Many people find the treatment deeply relaxing. Some become very calm or even fall asleep during the session.

4. Your Treatment Plan

Your first visit is also an opportunity to discuss what you can realistically expect from treatment.

Depending on your condition, symptoms, and goals, we may recommend a series of treatments rather than a single session. The frequency of visits varies from person to person.

We may also discuss supportive approaches such as Chinese herbal medicine, lifestyle recommendations, or other strategies that may complement your acupuncture care.

Your treatment plan can be adjusted as we see how your body responds.

5. How to Prepare for Your First Visit

You do not need to do anything complicated before your appointment.

A few simple suggestions:

  • Eat a light meal before your visit rather than arriving very hungry.
  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows access to your arms and legs.
  • Avoid excessive alcohol before treatment.
  • Let us know about any medications, supplements, recent procedures, or significant changes in your health.
  • Come with any questions or concerns you may have.

Most importantly, there is no need to feel nervous if you have never had acupuncture before. We will explain each step and make sure you are comfortable throughout the treatment.

A Personalized Approach to Care

Your first visit is more than simply receiving acupuncture. It is the beginning of a partnership focused on understanding your health and supporting your goals.
